Firefly Wins 2026 World Urban Car Award, Could Also Come to Nepal as Compact EV Demand Grows

Firefly, the entry-level sub-brand of NIO, has been crowned the 2026 World Urban Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show under the World Car Awards.

The win marks a first-ever World Car Award for both Firefly and NIO, highlighting the growing dominance of compact electric vehicles built for dense urban environments — a segment increasingly relevant for markets like Nepal.

The 2026 World Car Awards also saw a historic milestone, with all category winners being fully electric for the first time in the programme’s 21-year history.

The BMW iX3 won both World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle titles, while the Lucid Gravity took World Luxury Car. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 N was named World Performance Car and the Mazda 6e won World Car Design, underscoring the full-scale shift toward electric mobility across all segments.

The brand has already entered European markets such as Norway and the Netherlands and has begun rolling out in right-hand-drive markets like Thailand — a key signal for possible South Asian entry, including Nepal.

The Firefly hatchback measures 4003 mm in length, 1781 mm in width, and 1557 mm in height, with a 2615 mm wheelbase.

It features a 105 kW (141 hp) rear-wheel-drive setup producing 200 N·m of torque, paired with a 42.1 kWh LFP battery. It delivers up to 330 km WLTP range, accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 8.1 seconds, and has a top speed of 150 km/h, placing it firmly in the urban premium EV segment.

The win also reflects the broader rise of Chinese EV makers in compact mobility, following the BYD Seagull (Atto 1), which won the same category in 2025.

With right-hand-drive rollout underway and growing demand for small EVs in emerging markets, Firefly could become a strong contender for entry into Nepal’s urban EV segment in the near future.
