Royal Enfield Revives the Original Himalayan with the New 440

Royal Enfield has introduced the Himalayan 440 in India bringing back the familiar Himalayan 411-style adventure motorcycle with an updated 440cc powertrain.

The Himalayan 440 is based on the same mechanical platform as the Scram 440, but Royal Enfield has adapted it for more off-road-oriented use. It gets a 21-inch front wheel, longer front suspension travel and higher ground clearance, while retaining the rugged styling associated with the discontinued Himalayan 411.

Power comes from a 443cc, air/oil-cooled, single-cylinder engine producing 25.4bhp at 6,250rpm and 34Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox.

Compared with the Himalayan 411, the new motorcycle produces 1.4 bhp more power and 2 Nm additional torque. The sixth gear is also intended to make longer highway rides more relaxed.

Suspension duties are handled by a telescopic fork with 200mm of travel and a rear monoshock offering 180mm of travel.  The motorcycle has 220mm of ground clearance and uses a 21-inch spoke wheel at the front and a 17-inch spoke wheel at the rear. Unlike the Scram 440, the Himalayan 440 does not get alloy wheels, reflecting its more off-road-focused setup.

Braking comes from a 300mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc, with larger-piston calipers compared with the previous Himalayan 411. Dual-channel ABS is standard, while the rear ABS can be switched off for improved control on loose surfaces.

The Himalayan 440 also gets a simpler semi-digital instrument console. It combines an analogue speedometer with a digital display showing information such as fuel level, time, trip and odometer readings.

Royal Enfield's Tripper navigation system provides turn-by-turn directions. However, features such as the rev counter and compass found on the Himalayan 411 have been dropped.

The motorcycle uses a 15-litre fuel tank and shares its half-duplex split-cradle frame and several components with the Scram 440. It weighs 199kg in kerb condition, making it considerably heavier than the Scram 440. A USB Type-C charging port is also included.

The Himalayan 440 is offered in three colour options: Mustang Brown, Sela Black and Nelong White. 

The motorcycle, if introduced in Nepal, will be positioned below the Himalayan 450, giving Royal Enfield another option for buyers looking for a more traditional, relatively accessible adventure motorcycle.
