MG Motor is set to revolutionize the affordable EV market by introducing semi-solid-state battery technology in the upcoming MG4 electric hatchback. This marks the first time such advanced battery tech—previously reserved for premium or concept vehicles—will be available in a mass-market EV.

The battery, developed by QingTao Energy, contains only 5% liquid electrolyte, significantly improving thermal stability and safety. MG claims the battery has passed rigorous safety assessments, including a full 360-degree puncture test.

The semi-solid-state battery offers enhanced cold-weather performance, retaining 13.8% more range than conventional lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries in temperatures as low as -7°C (19.4°F). With a high energy density of 180 Wh/kg, the battery supports an estimated driving range of up to 334 miles (537 km CLTC), offering better efficiency and reduced fire risk compared to traditional lithium-ion packs.

The MG4 is powered by a 70 kWh battery paired with a rear-mounted 120 kW motor, delivering a rear-wheel-drive layout. This setup offers more engaging handling characteristics than front-wheel-drive rivals, such as the BYD Dolphin, which uses a 70 kW motor up front. Weighing around 1,450 kg—approximately 120 kg lighter than its predecessor—the new MG4 is expected to deliver improved performance and efficiency.

Dimensionally, the updated MG4 measures just under 4,400 mm in length and 1,842 mm in width, riding on a 2,750 mm wheelbase—making it slightly larger and more spacious than the BYD Dolphin.

Design-wise, the MG4 draws inspiration from the MG Cyberster, featuring a sharp front fascia, split headlamps, and an illuminated front emblem—giving the EV a futuristic and athletic appearance.Inside, the MG4 introduces the all-new MG×Oppo cockpit system, developed in collaboration with tech brand Oppo. The system enables  smartphone integration with features like gesture control, voice commands, and app syncing.
