The Government of Nepal has introduced a new online system allowing tourist vehicles entering the country via land routes to be registered digitally, significantly easing travel procedures for visitors.
The system, launched by the Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance, enables foreign vehicles—particularly those carrying Indian tourists and third-country travelers entering Nepal via India—to submit required details and pay applicable customs revenue online. The platform was officially inaugurated by Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle during a formal event today.
Shift from Physical to Digital Process
Until now, foreign vehicles entering Nepal had to obtain a temporary permit physically at customs checkpoints. Additionally, if travelers needed to extend their stay, they were required to revisit customs offices or pay penalties.
With the new system in place, tourists can now complete the entire process remotely—from filling out vehicle details to paying fees—before arriving in Nepal. This eliminates the need for physical paperwork and long waits at border points.
QR Code-Based Entry and Travel
Once the online form is completed and payment is made, users receive a QR code via email. This QR code can be presented at customs points for entry. According to officials, vehicles carrying this code can travel across Nepal without additional administrative hurdles.
The system also allows travelers to extend their vehicle permit duration online from anywhere within Nepal, further improving convenience.
Government’s Push for Efficient Public Service
Speaking at the launch, Minister Wagle stated that the initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to good governance and efficient public service delivery.
“This step has been taken to ensure tourists do not face unnecessary difficulties. We aim to make government services faster, smoother, and more efficient,” he said.
Similarly, Director General Shyam Prasad Mainali highlighted that the digitization of permits for foreign tourist vehicles will enhance transparency and operational efficiency.
How to Access the Service
Tourists can access the system through the official website of the Department of Customs by navigating to the “Our Services” section and selecting the Temporary Import of Vehicle (TIV) module. After submitting the required details, users receive a QR code that serves as their travel authorization upon payment.
Scope and Implementation
The service is currently applicable to vehicles used by Indian tourists and travelers from third countries entering Nepal via India. The Department of Customs noted that while overland travel from China is currently limited, the system is designed to accommodate such entries if they resume.
In the immediate term, the department expects tourists from India and Bangladesh to benefit the most from this digital facilitation service.
