Why Bajaj Chetak Could Dominate Nepal’s Electric Scooter Market

TATATATA

The iconic Chetak nameplate has returned to Nepal, this time in a completely new avatar—an electric one—aiming to make a significant impact on the country’s electric two-wheeler segment. The original Chetak, discontinued in the early 2000s, was a household favourite known for its reliability and style.

Today, Bajaj has reimagined this classic—combining the nostalgia of its petrol-era design with the technology and performance expected from a modern electric scooter.

What Makes It Stand Out in a Crowded Market?

Nepal’s electric two-wheeler market is crowded, with many low-cost models relying on imported components. Amidst this competition, the Bajaj Chetak stands out for its thoughtful engineering, brand legacy, and a design focused on real-world usability rather than flashy gimmicks.

 Design and Features

The new Chetak 3501 combines classic styling with modern features. It offers a claimed range of 153 km on a single charge, a full-metal IP67-rated body, and a 5-inch smart TFT screen with navigation, call, and music controls. Key features include keyless entry, anti-theft alerts, remote immobilization, accident detection, and a 35-litre under-seat storage compartment. It charges from 0 to 80% in just three hours—one of the fastest in its category. But are these on-paper specifications enough to make it a practical choice for daily riders?

Charging and Support Infrastructure

Bajaj’s support ecosystem addresses exactly that. With service centres, trained technicians, and customer care across Nepal, the Chetak has a reliability edge over other EVs that may falter after initial ownership. Amit Raj Chalise, Head of Marketing – HH Bajaj, says:

“Charging can be done anywhere, which is one of the conveniences of owning a Chetak. We have placed public charging at 21 locations across all Bajaj networks in Kathmandu, with plans to expand further. We also offer 24/7 roadside assistance, and home charging setups are available for those without existing arrangements, especially people who live in rented homes.”

The Chetak Experience Zone

To further enhance the ownership experience, Bajaj has opened a Chetak Experience Zone in Naxal, Kathmandu. Visitors can test ride scooters, explore interactive displays, make instant bookings, and consult experts on electric mobility. The facility also includes a dedicated service area, creating a comprehensive one-stop solution for both prospective and current EV owners.

More Than Just Another Electric Scooter

Bajaj’s success in India demonstrates the Chetak’s potential: with just one electric scooter, the company captured 29% of the Indian electric two-wheeler market in Q4 FY25. Backed by reliability, thoughtful engineering, and a growing service network, the Chetak is well-positioned to set the standard in Nepal and could soon become the country’s go-to electric scooter.
