Yamaha R2 Makes Global Debut in India

Yamaha has launched the all-new YZF-R2 in India, marking the company's entry into the 200cc supersport segment.

Making its global debut in India, the new motorcycle brings Yamaha's R-series design, performance-focused hardware and modern electronic features to a smaller-capacity platform.

The R2 is offered in three variants, with the range designed to cater to riders looking for a combination of sporty performance, everyday usability and additional technology.

Powering the motorcycle is an all-new 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, DOHC four-valve engine developed in Japan with inputs from Yamaha's Indian engineering team. It produces 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm and comes paired with a six-speed gearbox. A slip-and-assist clutch is offered as standard.

The engine uses a finger-follower rocker-arm valvetrain with Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating, technology derived from Yamaha's larger R-series motorcycles. Yamaha says the new powertrain has been developed to balance performance with fuel efficiency and everyday usability.

The R2 is built around a high-tensile steel tube diamond frame, with chassis dimensions influenced by the R6. The motorcycle weighs 149 kg, which Yamaha claims makes it the lightest motorcycle in its segment.

Suspension duties are handled by a 37 mm upside-down front fork and rear monoshock, while the motorcycle rides on 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends. Disc brakes are fitted front and rear, with dual-channel ABS offered as standard.

The motorcycle also gets a range of electronic rider aids. Traction control is standard across the range, while Yamaha Ride Control provides three riding modes — Street, Sport and Rain. These modes allow riders to adjust the motorcycle's response according to riding conditions and preferences.

The middle variant adds Yamaha's third-generation bi-directional quickshifter, allowing clutchless upshifts and downshifts. The system is also standard on the range-topping R2 M.

The R2 M gets additional hardware upgrades, including adjustable front forks, an adjustable rear shock absorber and adjustable clutch and brake levers. It also features a 3D-embossed emblem, faux-suede-finished seat, silver-finished swingarm and a shot-blasted muffler end cap.

Styling follows the latest Yamaha R-series design language, with a compact bi-functional LED headlight, dual LED position lights and a sharp aerodynamic fairing. The rear gets a block-style LED tail light inspired by the YZF-R1, along with a MotoGP-inspired swingarm design.

The motorcycle comes equipped with a 5-inch full-colour TFT display offering riding and navigation information, along with smartphone connectivity. The top-spec M variant additionally gets Yamaha's Smart Key system for keyless ignition.

The R2 is priced from Rs. 2,30,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi) in India. Yamaha will sell the motorcycle through its Blue Square dealerships from mid-September 2026.
