Proton Contributes Drones Worth Nearly RM200,000 to Nepal for Disaster Response

Malaysian car company Proton has extended humanitarian support to Nepal by contributing drones worth nearly RM 200,000 to the Government of Nepal to assist disaster assessment and response efforts following the recent floods.

As per the company, the drones were first handed over to Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) at the headquarters of the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) in Malaysia.

The equipment will be transported to Nepal by SMART, which is currently deployed in the country as part of Malaysia’s humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission. The drones are intended for the Government of Nepal and will remain in the country following their handover.

Representing Proton at the drone handover ceremony was Edmund Lim Meng Thong, CEO of Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd (PICSB), while NADMA was represented by its Director General, Dato’ Meor Ismail bin Meor Akim. The handover was also attended by representatives from Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Mr Choo Hwai Jeng and Encik Zul Izwan Hamzah.

Speaking at the handover, Edmund Lim said the contribution was intended to provide practical support to Nepal’s ongoing humanitarian and disaster response efforts. He noted that drones could provide valuable aerial visibility of affected areas, particularly locations that may be difficult or unsafe to reach immediately.

He added that SMART would provide the necessary training to the relevant Nepalese agency before handing over the equipment.

According to Proton, the drones will provide aerial support to disaster response teams by enabling them to assess affected areas, including locations that may be difficult or unsafe to access from the ground.

The technology will offer authorities a broader view of conditions on the ground, helping them assess situations and plan the deployment of personnel and resources more effectively.

Proton is also present in Nepal through its authorised distributor, Jagdamba Motors, which represents the Proton e.MAS brand in the country.

Demonstrating its commitment to supporting communities during times of crisis, Proton stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and hopes its humanitarian contribution will support ongoing relief, recovery and rehabilitation efforts following the devastating floods.

In a further demonstration of its commitment to Nepal, Jagdamba Motors has also contributed Rs. 4 Crore (NPR 40 million) to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund, along with additional support.

The collaboration between Proton and Jagdamba Motors reflects a shared commitment to standing alongside the people of Nepal during challenging times and contributing meaningfully to national relief and recovery efforts.
