BYD has made remarkable strides in Nepal’s electric vehicle (EV) market, thanks largely to the success of the Atto 3 SUV and the Dolphin hatchback. These models have not only strengthened the Chinese brand’s presence in the country but also positioned it as a frontrunner in Nepal’s growing EV segment.

With this momentum, the time is ripe for BYD to introduce the Atto 2—a compact electric SUV that could be a game-changer in the affordable EV space.

The Atto 2 is essentially a global version of the BYD Yuan Up, first launched in China in early 2024.  Designed as a more compact and budget-friendly SUV, the Atto 2 measures 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height.

That makes it slightly smaller than the Atto 3 by 145 mm in length and 45 mm in width—perfect for urban use in cities like Kathmandu, where space is a premium. Despite its smaller dimensions, it still offers an impressive 1,430 liters of cargo space with the rear seats folded.

What sets the Atto 2 apart is its foundation: BYD’s advanced e-Platform 3.0. It’s the first compact SUV from the brand to feature Cell-to-Body (CTB) integration, where the battery is embedded directly into the car’s structure. This not only improves cabin space and weight distribution but also enhances safety and rigidity—a major plus for Nepalese roads.

The Atto 2 is powered by a 45.1 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) Blade battery, matched with a 174 bhp front-mounted electric motor. This setup delivers a WLTP-certified range of 312 km on a full charge, which is more than adequate for daily commutes and weekend getaways.

Based on the market and variant, the Atto 2 offers a range of features that add strong value for a compact SUV. These include 17-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, a 10.1-inch or 12.8-inch infotainment screen, six airbags, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, a six-speaker sound system, ambient lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, power-folding side mirrors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system.

Nepal’s EV market is on an upward trajectory for the past few years. Urban consumers are increasingly looking for compact, affordable EVs with good range and modern features. The Atto 2 ticks all these boxes. Its smaller dimensions make it ideal for city driving, while its performance, practicality, and safety make it a strong contender for those upgrading from entry-level electric cars or downsizing from larger SUVs.

BYD currently offers a diverse lineup in the Nepalese market, including the Dolphin,Atto 3, M6, and Seal, with the Sealion 7 set to launch soon. Introducing the Atto 2 would not only strengthen its lineup but also attract a broader range of customers—from young professionals to small families—seeking a value-packed electric SUV.
