Skoda Auto is gearing up to launch a small electric vehicle (EV) in India as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on Europe and make India a key growth market.
The upcoming EV will be built on a localized version of the CMP21 platform, originally developed in China, tailored to Indian roads and buyers.
CEO Klaus Zellmer confirmed that the vehicle will be designed and manufactured in India, rather than importing European models like the Epiq. While details remain limited, the small EV will help Skoda meet CO2 emission norms and expand its affordable EV lineup. Production could begin around 2027.
Ahead of the small EV, Skoda plans to introduce premium imported models in India such as the Enyaq iV, a 77 kWh electric SUV with a 510 km range, and the compact Elroq SUV, launching in late 2025. These models will establish the brand among premium EV buyers, paving the way for locally produced, cost-effective EVs for the mass market.
This approach reflects Skoda’s dual strategy: building credibility with premium imports while preparing for a locally manufactured, India-focused EV. The CMP21 platform will also serve as a flexible base for future electric and multi-traction vehicles in India.
