BYD has announced the production of its 15,000,000th new energy vehicle (NEV), marking a major milestone in the company’s global electrification journey.
The achievement includes cumulative output of both battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) across BYD’s brands. The milestone vehicle is the Denza N8L, a large six-seat PHEV SUV positioned for the family car market.
Founded in 1995 and entering automobile manufacturing in 2003, BYD has rapidly scaled its NEV production in recent years. The company reached 10 million cumulative NEVs in late 2024, followed by 13 million in mid-2025. The jump to 15 million comes just 13 months after the 10-million milestone, highlighting accelerated production growth.
BYD’s cumulative NEV output now exceeds Tesla’s total EV production of approximately 8.1 million battery-electric vehicles and Volkswagen Group’s cumulative EV production of under 3 million BEVs and PHEVs. While Tesla focuses exclusively on BEVs, BYD’s figures include both BEVs and PHEVs, placing it among the largest NEV producers globally.
High-volume models such as the Dolphin and Seagull (Dolphin Mini/Atto 1), each with over one million units sold, along with SUVs like the Song Plus and Sealion 06, have been key contributors. Dynasty series models, including the Qin, Song, and Tang, continue to underpin both domestic and export sales.
From January to November this year, BYD sold 4,182,038 vehicles, up 11.3 percent year-on-year. With more than 900,000 employees worldwide and nearly 110,000 working in R&D, BYD’s 15-million-NEV milestone underscores its growing influence on global electric vehicle production, particularly as China remains the world’s largest NEV market.
